Systematic EO data Data Ingestion and Processing Frequencies – May 2025 Reference Patterns

These time-based definitions are derived from actual data availability patterns observed in May 2025 for products such as Sentinel-1 (SAR), Sentinel-2 (Optical), HLSL30 (Harmonized Landsat-Sentinel), and Sentinel-3 (Thermal and Atmospheric). The system is designed to trigger multiple data ingestion and processing rounds per day, depending on the satellite’s acquisition frequency and revisit characteristics. This approach:

  • Ensures efficient use of system resources
  • Supports timely catalog availability
  • Enables automated workflows to rapidly act on new data

The information aligns with the Hub’s reference implementation and will be further improved in the fully operational environment.

📊 Trigger Intervals Overview

The following chart visually represents the trigger intervals and frequency across the full 24-hour timeline for each satellite/product. satellite_trigger_intervals_chart.png

Note:
All ingestion and processing time estimations presented in this section are based on simulations and measurements carried out in a reference implementation environment equipped with a professional workstation (58 GB RAM & 18 CPUs) and a medium-to-high-speed internet connection (~100 Mbps).

Actual performance in the final operational system may vary due to: - Network bandwidth
- Processing concurrency
- Storage I/O speed
- Infrastructure-specific parameters

These values are indicative and serve as a baseline for system behavior and latency analysis. They do not represent hard performance guarantees.

On-Demand and Event Based Thematic Services

On-Demand and Event Based Thematic Services

The analysis of On-Demand and Event-Based Thematic Services reveals the flexibility and responsiveness of the AXIS 3 Governmental Hub in meeting various monitoring and assessment needs across multiple sectors.

In the Water Services sector, several products, such as oil spills and maritime vessel monitoring, are triggered by events or are available on-demand, demonstrating the Hub's ability to respond rapidly to incidents like environmental disasters or maritime activities.

Water Services

Service Product Trigger Type
Inland/Coastal 5m muddy waters WS-WQ-BE-BD Triggered by Event or On-demand/Ad-hoc
Inland 5m oil spills (triggered) WS-WQ-IE-BT Triggered by Event or On-demand/Ad-hoc
Maritime vessels 1m (triggered) WS-MS-MV-1T Triggered by Event or On-demand/Ad-hoc
Maritime vessels 3m (triggered) WS-MS-MV-3T Triggered by Event or On-demand/Ad-hoc
Aquaculture infrastructure 1m (triggered) WS-MS-MI-1T Triggered by Event or On-demand/Ad-hoc
Aquaculture infrastructure 3m (triggered) WS-MS-MI-3T Triggered by Event or On-demand/Ad-hoc
Marine debris (triggered) WS-MS-MD-BT Triggered by Event or On-demand/Ad-hoc
Oil spills (triggered) WS-MS-MS-BT Triggered by Event or On-demand/Ad-hoc

Note: For the listed water services, it is necessary to clarify whether they are triggered automatically by specific events (e.g., detection of oil spills, marine debris, or maritime vessel presence) or whether they are available on-demand ad hoc, where a user can initiate the service at any given time. The distinction between event-triggered services and on-demand services should be confirmed to ensure accurate operational procedures and user expectations.

Similarly, the Agricultural Monitoring sector features a variety of products—ranging from backscatter calculations to crop growth estimations—that are triggered by events, supporting timely agricultural assessments and interventions.

Agricultural Monitoring

Service Product Trigger Type
Backscatter calculations AG-SM-BSC-S1 Triggered by Event
NDVI extraction AG-SM-NDVI-S2 Triggered by Event
Soil Backscatter Coefficient AG-SM-SBC-S2S1 Triggered by Event
Soil Moisture Estimation AG-SM-SME-00 Triggered by Event
LAI estimation AG-CG-LAI-AB Triggered by Event
CCC estimation AG-CG-CCC-AB Triggered by Event
CDMC estimation AG-CG-CDMC-AB Triggered by Event
Crop Growth Estimation AG-CG-CGE-00

In the Forest Service, the combination of on-demand services like forest type maps and bi-annual updates for biodiversity indices and health trends highlights the need for both frequent and periodic updates, with the system being adaptable to the dynamic requirements of forest monitoring.
